How Alarming

It's official: I must get a new alarm clock. Today.

I'm not sure that a new alarm clock will solve the operator issues (ahem), but I need one that will not allow me to confuse a.m. with p.m. and reliably rings when it's supposed to if set properly (To be fair, I don't always set the alarm properly, hence the aforementioned "operator error.")

Yesterday morning, I was supposed to get up at 5:15 a.m. to make myself look like a Polished Professional™ to go to a client meeting in Dallas. Leave the house at 6:00; flight at 7:40. My breakfast was cooked and in the fridge. My big bag was loaded with airplane and business meeting essentials. My grown-up clothes were laid out and my shoes were polished.

All of this prep work turned out to be absolutely essential because I woke up WITHOUT THE ALARM at 5:50 a.m.

Let me do the math for you: That allowed 10 minutes for to get from bedhead to Polished Professional.

It didn't happen.

But I did get out the door by 6:15 and was safely at the airport, drinking coffee and eating my packed breakfast in plenty of time to get my ass into the Southwest Airlines seat.

An inquiry into the incident has revealed that I set the alarm for 5:15 p.m.

Duh.

Then today, I planned to go to the 8:30 a.m. CrossFit Austin class. My plan was to set the alarm for 8:00 a.m... but I didn't.

I just didn't set it.

WTF?

So again, I woke up late (8:07) and ran around like a maniac to get where I was going on time.

Fail.

I was three minutes late. Nine-burpee penalty.
Warmup (abbreviated 'cause I was late)
jump rope
split squats

Skill
3X 1 push jerk + 1 split jerk, 65#
2X 1 push jerk + 1 split jerk, 75#
1X 1 push jerk + 1 split jerk, 80#

WOD
4 rounds
push ups :15 on :45 off
swings :30 on :30 off, 16kg
unbroken wall balls :45 on :15 off, 14#
split squats 1:00 on 1:00 off (switch legs at :30)
My numbers: 79 - 77 - 77 - 81
I'd never done split jerks before, so that was pretty fun. I know I can jerk more than 80# (and I know far too well I can be a jerk), but I was tired this morning and all in a muddle from being late, so I didn't throw around very much weight. Whatever.

The WOD was vicious and fun. I really loved this one!
pushups: to the deck... 9 - 10 - 9 - 11
swings: 16kg kettlebell all the way overhead every time
wall ball: horrific. Many of them would not have been counted in FGB, but I counted them anyway.
split squats: my left leg is WAY stronger than my right from roller derby. again: whatever

  1. Split jerk video is super informative! However, it would help if I could actually SEE Greg's straight torso. Camera man is fired.

  2. I use my cell phone alarm. It lets me program different alarms for different days. It works really well for me - I only have to worry about it when I want to change it. (I also had to turn off the snooze option. Lifesaver.) My phone is pretty no-frills, so I would guess that most phones have something similar?

Also, I LOVE the split jerk. I think it's the mental component - I like movements I have to think about. Makes the physical suck a little less dominant, I think. :) We were doing dumbbell clean and jerks Wednesday, though, and my legs kept trying to split clean and then scissor into the split jerk. Awkward!

  3. The split jerk reminds me of Molly Shannon during her "Superstar!" days. I totally want to try them asap.

  4. I use the Apollo Daybreak Duo - http://amzn.to/99vpk6, though I didn't pay this much for it. I'm sure if you poke around the internet you'll find it. I think I got mine from Costco.

  5. Have you thought about investing in one of those sunrise alarm clocks? I'm lucky to be one of those people who wakes with the dawn, no matter what, but that only works for half the year. I'm thinking about getting one for winter.

  6. Annie, glad the video helped! I wish I'd watched it BEFORE our class.

Addi, I might try my iPhone; it does allow for saving alarms. Maybe that will save me!

Liz, I'm TOTALLY yelling "superstar" every time I do a split squat or split jerk from now on. LOVE THAT!

Cheryl, that looks awesome. But $300! Yowza!

Lydia, I used to have one of those, and I loved it. But I sleep in an eye mask now and I sleep great -- but I need sound to wake me. I definitely recommend the sunrise clock if you don't use an eye mask.
