'Scuse Me While I Turn 16

Back in the day, my best friend Renee and I were total Durannies. She loved Simon, and John Taylor (bass, for the uninitiated) was all mine. We watched the documentary Sing Blue Silver almost every day after school, usually with a bowl of buttered popcorn and orange juice over ice, daydreaming about how we would go see them and then, when we snuck backstage, Simon and John would fall madly in love with us and take us to Paris immediately. By sunset, after a whirlwind shopping spree, we'd be romantically perched atop the Eiffel Tower, never to return to rural Pennsylvania... unless Duran Duran played a show at the Spectrum in Philadelphia and begged us to go with them.

So, yeah. That didn't happen.

But, I did meet John Taylor once, at a record signing in San Francisco. By then I'd graduated from college and expanded my musical horizons, but my Duran Duran cassettes were still stacked next to Faith No More and New Order. John T. smiled at me and posed for pictures, just as nice as I always knew he would be. It was pretty great – mostly because Dave was there with me and said, "I think he liked you."

"New Moon on Monday" and "Rio" are still my favorite Duran Duran songs, and today, there's a new single on iTunes: "All You Need is Now."

Am I telling you this just to expose my massive inner dork? Nope. I'm telling you because the single is free. So if you're a secret Durannie, too, help yourself to the latest. You don't even have to tell anyone!

(I clearly am forever stuck in the '80s. The jacket I'm wearing to a holiday party tonight is not very much different than the one Simon is sporting in the pic above.)

  3. I love Duran Duran. I remember going to see them at Madison Square Garden when I was in High school. And yes I still have the program. My favorite was Roger Taylor.

  4. Jean --> All we need is someone who loved Nick and Andy, then you, Renee, and I could have a Duran Duran video viewing party!

  5. I'm your Nick girl. I've always been a sucker for eyeliner.

Sign me up for that viewing party.

  6. OMG! We only need an Andy fan. There's got to be someone out there... where are you, Andy fan?

  7. Andy was always a tough sell. I fear the type of girl who'd like Andy wasn't a big D2 fan.

  8. Sorry I'm a few days late, but yes, here I am, the Andy fan! I only found your blog a week or so ago looking for paleo recipes, and with the crossfitting and all, I knew you were a girl after my own heart! But I couldn't believe a D2 post (or 2!). I had my whole room done in mostly D2 posters (including the one you have above), and yes, Andy was my favorite (it's that whole guitar hero thing). I've been very disappointed in him since, and count myself under Simon's sway now, but it was Andy for many years. And I can't believe you got to meet them in person!
P.S. I promise my next post will be something more adult. ;-)

  9. de23 --> Hello and welcome to the dino-chow, CrossFit, Duran Duran party! I had my room wall papered in John Taylor! My closet had double doors, so both of them AND my bedroom door were completely covered like a collage: tiny images of JT's head cut out of Tiger Beat, full-size posters, and everything in between. Oh, my.

I think the best version of Andy was on the Arena tour. I didn't see it live, but in the Sing Blue Silver video, he seems so playful. Let's just remember him that way ;-)

  11. Kosmika --> Um... of course! And I totally wish I had those red leather gloves right now! But that's because in my world, it's always the '80s.
