You Are Not So Smart

Hey, you guys! I've got a favor to ask you... can you read this post, then go listen to a super-good song, then cast a vote for my husband, if you like it?

Cool! I knew you'd say yes.

Here's the scoop:

My wicked-smart and talented husband Dave introduced me to the blog You Are Not So Smart a few months ago. It's mission is pretty awesome:
The Misconception: You are a rational, logical being who sees the world as it really is.
The Truth: You are as deluded as the rest of us, but that’s OK, it keeps you sane.
David McRaney, the brains behind the writing, deconstructs and demystifies topics we kinda take for granted, like the Just-World Fallacy ("Misconception: People who are losing at the game of life must have done something to deserve it.") and Procrastination ("Misconception:You procrastinate because you are lazy and can’t manage your time well.").

It's good, heady stuff.

In celebration of his new book deal, readers were invited to submit creative pieces that relate to his blog, and my husband Dave entered a really awesome song in the contest.

It would be super badass if you could go listen to Dave's song, and if you like it, give him your vote.

You can listen to it RIGHT HERE.
Just scroll down to David Humphreys and click play – then vote!

These are the lyrics, in case you want to sing along:
SMARTER by David Humphreys

she. she thinks the clock has a plan
to make her late for the bus
and she'll miss his connection.

the radio hums and it sound like a signal

he. he waits too long
says I'll get to it soon
I'm on my way to the car and the airport

gotta go baby but you know that i love you

i wish we were smarter
with a tattoo of a plan on the back of our hand
i wish we were smarter
with every step we fall a bit
i wish we were smarter

he. he thinks the moon follows him
down the hall, out the door
because it loves him like Elvis.

he says the arrows are all pointing his way

she. she likes a sale
at the mall, all the clothes
puts them on then she's somebody special

but she looks like everybody on her block

are we all just fucked up monkeys
in our self-made cement zoo
waiting for someone to come along
and tell us what to do?

or are we all stuck here together
with the flaws that we have bought
leaning on our neighborhood
for all the things that we are not?

And for fun, you can hear more of Dave's songs – with me on piano and backing vocals! Happy Birthday Mrs. K and Two Lanes are two of his best. Enjoy!

  4. Oh, Patty! You have no idea. Dave is the WORST (best) because he can draw and write and sing and play guitar and play piano and write songs and he's smart, too. He'd be super annoying if he weren't so sweet and loving.

  5. Dave's song was a *great* representation of the site. And that site? Awesome. And added to my list of blogs. Thank you.
