Which is why it didn't seem like a good idea to accept the kind invitation from my co-workers and client to go to a happy hour at a brewpub today. Seemed like it could go two ways:
1. I'd avoid eating fried, carb-loaded bar food and drinking beer.
2. Or I woudn't.
Neither option sounded fun or, frankly, very nurturing.
Instead, I got directions to the closest supermarket (hello, Kroger!) and went hunting. This is what I bagged for dinner tonight and breakfast tomorrow.
Dinner
Roasted turkey leg
English cucumber
Marinated cauliflower, artichoke, and olive salad (I hope that's olive oil and not canola, but you take what you can get in the jungle.)
Strawberries
Dark chocolate (a tiny treat can't hurt, right?)
BreakfastIt was fun hunting in the store for dino-chow, and if not for the kipper snacks which I tracked down in the "canned meats" aisle, I could have stayed completely out of the aisles in the dark heart of the packaged foods. Stay out of the maze, people! We are not rats hitting the button for a pellet of crappy, average American food. We are mighty hunters who patrol the perimeter for fuel.
Strawberries
Kipper snacks
Almonds
So now I'm going to eat my giant roasted turkey leg with my hands, and since there's no one here with me, I might growl while I do it. Just for fun. Then I'm doing a tiny bit of work and going to sleep early in the ultra-comfy hotel bed with Law & Order to keep me company on the ridiculously, awesomely large flat-screen TV. In the morning, I'm hitting the hotel gym at 6:00 a.m. for a met-con sure to – if not chase the demons away entirely – keep them at bay for a few more hours.
I'm in the same boat as you, traveling and foraging for food while in training 8-10 hours a day. I'm eating a bit fruit heavy, but have managed to stay on the dino-chow, even if I have to indulge in a little fasting when there's nothing for lunch I can eat!
ReplyDeleteGood on you, Amber! And I agree -- much easier to get your paws on fruit than veggies. But a few days of that can't hurt. Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteI used to HATE traveling and trying to find stuff to eat. Love that you grabbed some kipper snacks!! I love those things!
ReplyDeleteKipper Snacks are SO yummy. But I always feel bad eating them with other people around. So smoky! So fishy! But so good.
ReplyDeleteMel,
ReplyDeleteThere is a Sprouts just around the corner. 5190 Preston Rd. Lot's of nitrate free goodies and yummy veggies. Everything you want and nothing you don't.
Are you in the Dallas/Plano vicinity!? You could've been been eating sushi with me tonight! You do like sushi...right!? :)
ReplyDeleteAnd....you could've had a good yoga session with me tonight, as well! Tomorrow morning perhaps!? It may be just what you need. And, downstairs we have this really cool Euro mart with a great selection of random fish in tomatoes. YUM!!!
Matt! You totally caught me. I PLANNED to workout in the hotel gym and slept in late instead. I'm hanging my head in shame.
ReplyDeleteThere's a very good chance I'll have to travel for work again, and if I do, this is my pledge that I'll both workout AND review the hotel gym.
